In Alberta Dental Assistants are well paid and if you are full-certified, then you won't have much difficulties finding a job. Alberta dental assistants can be divided in the following groups depending on the work involved - chairside assistants,intra-oral assistants, receptionists. Depending on where you work, you can do one, or all three types of work. Logically, there are three types of certification with the Alberta Dental Assistant Association as well. To become a certified Alberta Dental Assistant, you must complete an educational course. You could take course and then look for an available position (which is the most reasonable option), or find work and then take courses to become certified. The duties that each of the three categories is responsible for are different. The duties of the chairside dental assistants are the following - receive and prepare patients for treatment, sterilize, prepare and set out dental instruments and materials, assist dentists during dental procedures, record dental the performed dental procedures, educate patients. Intra-oral assistants have to perform the following duties - polish clinical crowns and apply fluoride, apply dental dams, pit and fissure sealants, materials and cavity bases and liners, apply and remove matrices and wedges, expose x-rays, place and remove gingival retraction cords, perform limited scaling procedures to remove tooth surface deposits. The position of receptionists is easier in terms of the tasks involved, hence the salary is lower, but nonetheless, receptionists are responsible for - answering phone calls, co-ordinate appointment schedules, keep records of payroll, maintain inventory supplies, use and maintain dental computer software.

As of 2007, under the new Alberta's Health Professions Act and Dental Assistants Profession Regulation, registration with the College of Alberta Dental Assistants (CADA) is obligatory in case you meet identified competency requirements and provide professional services directly to the public, teach the practice of the profession to members or students of the profession, or supervise registered members who provide services to the public. If you are not registered, you may provide just basic services as basic chairside tasks. In Alberta, the majority of the people working as dental assistants are employed by the Health Care and Social Assistance industry.

According to the 2007 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, Albertans in the Dental Assistants occupational group working part-time or full-time earned from $31,100 to $55,600 a year. On an annual basis, the average salary for Alberta dental assistants is $43,200.
