To become a certified dental chairside assistant, one must successfully complete a Dental Chairside Assistant program from an accredited educational institution. Such a training program teaches students in a wide range of laboratory and clinical skills, like how to perform radiological procedures, preparing various dental materials, preparing dental clients for treatments. There is also some administrative training involved including learning computerized office procedures (bookkeeping and appointment control). So basically, such a training course prepares the graduate for the job and enables him/her to become useful in all aspects of the dental office practice.

In the modern day's advanced health care market, a Chairside Dental Assistant is expected to take on more responsibilities, both administrative and clinical. The assistant must be able to handle leading edge equipment and instrumentation. Part of the dental assisting duties are the provision of chairside dental support to dentists, dental hygienists, or dental technicians. The assistant is the one who prepares work station, instruments, and materials, and escorts patient to the work station.
